Dr. Jacobson believes that this new study showing a later lunar birthday means that our planet's impact history was more turbulent than earlier thought. The alteration in Earth's bombardment rate, he suggests, also means an alteration in the quantity of energy that went into our planet's oceans and atmosphere. It also has implications for the history of our planet's surface temperature--which is important because liquid water could not exist until the surface had cooled off sufficiently.
In 2010 and 2011, the French astrophysicists devised their model to explain how the moons of Saturn were born. They based their findings on data derived from the Cassini probe--that is investigating the Saturn-system--and on numerical simulations. The team found that Saturn's bewitching rings, which are slender disks composed of tiny chunks of gleaming ice surrounding the giant planet, gave rise to the icy moons. This happened because the rings spread as time went by--and when the rings attained a critical distance from the planet (termed the Roche limit), their ends melded together and created small worldlets that broke off and floated away. In this way the rings created the icy moons orbiting Saturn.
"We think that the giant planets got their satellites kind of like the Sun got its planets, growing like miniature solar systems and ending with a stage of final collisions," lead author Dr. Erik Asphaug, of the University of California at Santa Cruz, said in a statement to the press on October 18, 2012.
