Almost every moon in our Sun's family of orbiting objects, including Earth's own bewitching, large Moon, rotates on its axis at the same speed as it orbits its parent-planet. It is for this reason that we always observe the same side of our Moon facing us on Earth. But on Pluto, things work a bit differently. Astronomers have now discovered that there are no hidden sides to its moons!

Like Earth's own large Moon, Triton is locked in synchronous rotation with its planet--one side always faces Neptune. However, because of Neptune's odd orbital inclination, both of the moon's polar regions take turns facing the Sun. Spacecraft images of Triton reveal mounds and round pits formed from icy lava flows (cryovolanism), as well as smooth volcanic plains. The surface of the moon is only sparsely cratered, indicating that its surface is new--that is, it is constantly being resurfaced, probably by the "lava" flow from icy volcanoes. Triton is very bright--its fresh, sparkling, new ice-coating is believed to cover a heart of metal and rock. Triton's high density suggests that it contains more rock in its interior than the icy moons of Saturn and Uranus.
Titan circles its giant parent-planet once every 15 days and 22 hours. Like Earth's own large Moon, and a number of other moons dancing around the quartet of giant gaseous planets of our Solar System's outer realm, its rotation period is identical to its orbital period. This means that Titan is tidally locked in synchronous rotation with Saturn--always showing only one face to its planet.

Earth's Moon is the fifth largest moon in our entire Solar System, as well as the only world beyond our planet that we have visited. Our lunar companion is the largest and brightest object in the sky at night, and many astronomers think that it was born when the tragedy that was the pulverized Theia blasted into ancient Earth billions of years ago. There are other theories, however, that seek to explain how our Moon came to be. Nevertheless, the Giant Impact theory stands its ground as the most credible explanation for lunar birth. When the doomed, destroyed Theia impacted Earth, it shot debris above our planet. This abundant debris eventually coalesced to form our Moon.
Our Moon's temperature reaches about 260 degrees Fahrenheit when under a full Sun. However, in darkness, the temperature dives down to approximately -280 degrees Fahrenheit.
The two scientists found clear evidence of water in nearly all of the large pyroclastic deposits that had been mapped earlier across our Moon's surface, including deposits near the Apollo 15 and 17 landing sites where the water-bearing glass bead samples were collected.
