Neptune is circled by only 14 moons, a considerably smaller number than Jupiter's 70. Also, most of Neptune's moons are extremely small. Triton, however, is an exception. In fact, Triton harbors 99.7% of the mass of Neptune's entire system of moons combined. The second-largest irregular moon in our Solar System, Phoebe of Saturn, sports only about 0.03% of Triton's mass. It is thought that Triton was snared by its adopted parent-planet some time after Neptune had already formed a system of moons. This means that the capture of the wandering Triton was likely a catastrophic event for Neptune's original moons, disrupting their orbits, and causing them to blast into each other--thus creating a rubble disc.

For a long time, planetary scientists thought that in the aftermath of the Moon-forming collision, hydrogen dissociated from water molecules. According to this scenario, both water and other elements that have low boiling temperatures (volatile elements), escaped from the disk and were lost forever to space. This model would form a volatile-element-depleted and bone-dry Moon. At the time, this scenario seemed to be consistent with earlier analyses of lunar samples.

If this ancient catastrophic impact really did occur, there should be deposits of these tragic moons on the Martian surface. The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is currently planning a sample return mission to Phobos and Deimos, the Martian Moons Explorer, and NASA has plans to eventually return samples to Earth from the surface of Mars-- perhaps as soon as the 2020s. At the conclusion of their paper, the authors note, "Our scenario provides further motivation for a sample return mission to the Martian satellites."
Planetary scientists usually calculate the Moon's age by using the radioactive decay of elements like uranium, explained Dr. John Chambers in the April 2, 2014 National Geographic News. Dr. Chambers is a planetary scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. By studying an element with a recognized decay rate, and knowing its concentration in Moon rocks or the Earth's surface, scientists are able to calculate back in time to when the material first formed. However, there are numerous and varying radioactive materials that can provide differing timelines, added Dr. Chambers, who was not involved in the study.

Aside from that, it was also the third voyage by humans to the moon; however, no human had ever stepped foot on the moon until this specific voyage.
