It extends from the orbit of Neptune to approximately 50 AU. Neptune's average distance from our Sun is about 30.1 AU--its perihelion is 29.8 AU, while its aphelion is 30.4 AU.

However, in 1992, the discovery of the first KBO (other than Pluto), made astronomers come to the realization that Pluto is not far from the madding crowd of a vast population of other Kuiper Belt ice balls.

Kepler-22b is an extrasolar planet that circles Kepler-22, a G-type star that is situated about 600 light-years from our own planet in the constellation Cygnus. This intriguing new world, that resides beyond our Solar System, was first spotted by NASA's highly productive, though ill-fated, Kepler Space Telescope in 2011. Kepler-22b has the distinction of being the first known transiting extrasolar planet to reside within the so-called habitable zone of its star. The habitable zone is the term used to describe that Goldilocks region around a star where water can exist in its life-loving liquid state. Planets dwelling in this fortunate region are not too hot, not too cold, but just right for water and, hence, life to exist. A planet that circles its star in the habitable zone suggests that there is the possibility--though not the promise--of life as we know it to exist on that world.

The exact composition of these bodies of liquid remained unknown until 2014, when the radar instrument aboard Cassini was first used to show that Ligeia Mare, the second largest sea on Titan, is richly endowed with methane. Ligeia Mare is similar in size to two of the Great Lakes on Earth combined--Lake Huron and Lake Michigan! The new study, published in the February 25, 2016 issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, which used the radar instrument in a different mode, independently confirmed the 2014 result. "It's a marvelous feat of exploration that we're doing extraterrestrial oceanography on an alien moon," commented Dr. Steve Wall in an April 26, 2016 Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Press Release. Dr. Wall, who is of the JPL in Pasadena, California, is Cassini radar team deputy lead.



JAXA has announced a space mission scheduled to begin in 2022, with an expected return to Earth in 2026. "Its objective is to carry out close-up remote sensing and in-situ observations of both Phobos and Deimos, and to bring back samples from Phobos," commented Dr. Ryuki Hyodo in the July 4, 2016 CNRS Press Release. Dr. Hyodo is a planetary scientist, originally from Kobe University in Japan, and he is also currently collaborating with the IPG. "High-resolution impact simulations are still needed to understand more about the disk structure," he continued to explain to the press.



By studying how the four inner planets evolved and grew--using more than 250 computer simulations--the planetary scientists discovered that if the Moon-birthing blast had happened early, the quantity of material accreted onto Earth afterward would be enormous. If the impact had occurred late, the amount of material would be relatively small.
