Triton was the second moon in our Solar System that was found to have a substantial atmosphere, which is primarily composed of nitrogen--with smaller quantities of carbon monoxide and methane. Discovered by William Lassell in 1846, only seventeen days after the discovery of Neptune, Triton is one of the most frigid worlds in our Solar System, with a surface temperature of only about 38 Kelvin. Triton's frozen surface is coated by nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and water ices, and it has a high geometric albedo of more than 70%. Surface features include a large southern polar cap, ancient cratered planes that are cross-cut by scarps and graben, as well as much younger features thought to have been formed by endogenic processes like cryovolcanism (ice volcanoes).
There are currently over a thousand known KBOs, and more than 100,000 KBOs over 62 miles in diameter are believed to exist. Pluto is compositionally similar to many other objects inhabiting the Kuiper Belt, and its orbital period is characteristic of a class of KBOs termed plutinos, that share the same 2:3 resonance with Neptune.

The beautiful, banded, blue ice-giant planet, Neptune, is the furthest major planet from the Sun. It is also orbited by a very weird large moon that may not have been born a moon at all. The moon, Triton, is about 1,680 miles in diameter, and sports features that eerily resemble those found on the dwarf planet Pluto. Pluto is a denizen of the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is a reservoir of comets and other icy bodies--some large, some small--that circle around our Sun beyond the orbit of Neptune, at a distance of about 30 to 55 Astronomical Units (AU) from our Star. One AU is equal to the average distance of Earth from the Sun--approximately 93,000,000 miles.
Alas, this is not the case with Phobos and Deimos. Phobos, the larger of the duo of little Martian moons, at 22 kilometers in diameter, is lazily tumbling towards Mars and will approach the Roche limit in about 20 million years. At this tragic point, it will shatter into fragments that will ultimately form a spectacular ring around its planet. Only Deimos will remain--bereft of its companion. Deimos is the smaller moon of the pair, and circles its parent-planet further out. This last remaining little moon will be a lonely object lingering in the Martian sky at this sad point--but it was not always thus. The new 2016 study suggests that Mars once possessed a very complex system of many moons.
The current study's Franco-Belgian-Japanese collaboration looks forward to this mission. JAXA plans to enlist them to conduct tests on the Martian samples when they are returned to Earth. The samples will help the scientists determine whether Phobos is indeed made up of a mixture of Martian mantle and debris left in the wake of the tragic crash of the doomed, vanished protoplanet--as suggested by their supercomputer simulations.
